Cutter and Plotter Support Checklist

Cutter and plotter failures may originate in media handling, blade setup, pinch rollers, grit rollers, carriage motion, optical registration, communication, software, or the artwork itself.

Identify the system

• Manufacturer, exact model, serial number when appropriate, age, and firmware.
• Cutting software, design software, versions, operating system, and USB, network, serial, or Bluetooth connection.
• Blade holder, blade type and angle, pen or tool accessories, stand, take-up system, and optical-registration features.
• Media manufacturer, type, width, liner condition, and whether material is sheet or roll.

Describe the symptom

State whether the issue is incomplete cuts, cutting through the liner, lifting corners, distorted shapes, tracking drift, skipped steps, carriage noise, failed registration marks, communication loss, incorrect scale, or unexpected cutting paths. Note where in the job it begins and whether it changes with media width or length.

Capture setup and results

• Photos of the blade extension, holder installation, pinch-roller positions, loaded media, control screen, and finished cut.
• Force, speed, acceleration, passes, offset, overcut, tool condition, and test-cut result.
• Artwork dimensions, page size, orientation, weed lines, registration settings, and whether the file was imported or created natively.
• A short video for tracking, noise, carriage behavior, or intermittent communication.

Perform safe basic checks

Power the machine down before cleaning accessible grit rollers or inspecting the blade holder. Confirm that pinch rollers sit in approved zones, the blade rotates freely, media is square, and cables are secure. Run the manufacturer’s small built-in test before changing multiple settings.

Document recent changes

Record a new blade, holder, media, computer, cable, driver, software update, firmware update, move, jam, impact, or long idle period. Save a known-good file and note whether it still works.

Avoid random adjustment: Change one variable at a time and record the result so the original setup can be restored.
