3D Printer Diagnostic Intake Checklist
3D-printer diagnosis depends on the printing process. Identify whether the machine is filament, resin, powder, pellet, or another system before applying troubleshooting advice.

Stop for safety: Disconnect power for damaged wiring, overheating, smoke, repeated thermal-runaway warnings, crushed cables, leaking resin near electronics, or uncontrolled motion. Handle resin, solvents, hot surfaces, powders, and UV exposure according to their safety data and manufacturer instructions.
Identify the complete setup
- Manufacturer, exact model, serial number when appropriate, age, and modifications.
- Firmware, slicer and version, operating system, connection method, and relevant plugins.
- Material manufacturer, type, color, lot or age, storage conditions, and profile used.
- Nozzle or hotend, build surface, extruder, resin vat or film, curing equipment, enclosure, filtration, and accessories.
Describe the failure
State whether the problem involves startup, homing, heating, extrusion, first layer, adhesion, layer shift, dimensional accuracy, surface quality, support failure, delamination, failed exposure, communication, or complete print stoppage. Copy errors exactly and note the layer or elapsed time when failure begins.
Collect useful evidence
- Photos of the full machine, failed part from multiple angles, build surface, nozzle or vat area, and control message.
- The project file when shareable, exported machine code, slicer profile, orientation, supports, temperatures or exposure settings, speeds, layer height, and infill.
- A known-good test model printed with the same material and settings.
- Ambient temperature, humidity, enclosure condition, ventilation, and material-drying history.
Document maintenance and changes
List nozzle, film, screen, hotend, thermistor, heater, belt, bearing, build-surface, firmware, slicer, or material changes. Record jams, crashes, failed calibrations, power events, moves, and long periods of storage.
Prepare for support
Keep the failed print and do not erase logs or overwrite the profile. Back up firmware configuration and slicer presets. Clean only what can be cleaned safely without destroying evidence of leakage, contamination, or mechanical damage.
